txt2traveline

txt2traveline is a mobile phone texting service which allows you get bus times sent to you for any bus stop you choose. The service covers all bus companies and is a partnership between Fife Council and Traveline Scotland. You can get the bus times for ANY bus stop in Fife. Download the promotional leaflet from the Publications section on this page.

So, how does it work?

Simply text an 8-digit bus stop reference code to the txt2traveline number - 0777 608 2 608 - and you will get back the departure times of the next few buses from your chosen stop. You can actually customise your message too, to allow you to pick a destination, a specific bus service, time period or date. The service is automated and operates 24 hours-a-day, every day.

How much will it cost me?

The message you send is charged at your normal network provider charge. The returned message from txt2traveline costs 25p. (Please note that you will still be charged if you send an invalid or incorrect message). Pricing information correct at time of publication (25/01/06).

How do I find the bus stop reference code?

Bus stop reference codes are unique and so, information received relates only to one specific bus stop. You might want to pick the stop nearest your house, the stop you use to get to work or even the stop nearest your favourite pub/restaurant. Why not store the code of your favourite stop in your phone? You can then check it's times from anywhere. All codes are 8-digit numbers beginning with '343' - the prefix for Fife. Codes are obtainable in 2 ways - either individually on a small panel on the bus stop flag or, for a full list of all stops in Fife, you can check the list in the Publications section of this page.

What kind of message should I send to txt2traveline?

You're probably familiar with texting your friends already and you might even use your own short-hand or symbols when you text them. txt2traveline works in the same way. Your message might simply consist of the bus stop code but, by using dots (.), exclamation marks (!) or question marks (?), you can customise your message the way you want. Check out the examples below to find the message most suited to you :

For Next Departures...

simply text the bus stop code :

e.g. text 34398765 to 0777 608 2 608

to get the times of the next buses from your chosen stop.

For Next Departures on a Specific Route...

Text the bus stop code followed by an exclamation mark and then the bus service number:

e.g. text 34398765!x26 to 0777 608 2 608

To get the times of the next buses on Service X26 from your chosen stop.

For Next Departures to a Specific Destination*...

Text the bus stop code followed by a dot and then the destination village/town name:

e.g. text 34398765.elie to 0777 608 2 608

To get the times of the next direct buses to Elie from your chosen stop.

For Next Departures to a Specific Destination* on a Specific Route...

Text the bus stop code followed by a dot, the destination village/town name, an exclamation mark and bus service number:

E.g. text 34398765.elie!X26 to 0777 608 2 608

To get the times of the next direct buses to Elie on Service X26 from your chosen stop.

For Departures After a Specific Time on a Specific Date of the Current Month...

Text the bus stop code followed by a question mark, the 24-hour clock time and the date :

E.g. text 34398765?170009 to 0777 608 2 608

To get the times of the buses after 5pm (1700) on the 9th (09) of this month.

NOTES:

1.    *the destination must be reachable from your chosen stop by a direct bus service. At present, txt2traveline cannot give details of connecting services;

2.    the text message you send is not case sensitive so you don't have to worry about using capital letters or lower case letters;

3.    any destination you key in as part of your message should simply be a town or village name - there's no need to specify an exact stop;

4.    It doesn't matter which order you place each item within your message except for the bus stop code which MUST always come first. After that, the time, route or destination can be in any order as long as they are preceeded by the correct symbol. So, remember that

 ROUTE = !

 DESTINATION = .

 TIME/DATE = ?

5.    To request buses after a specific time on a specific date, you must use the 24-hour clock time followed by the 2-digit date of the current month. For example, keying ?091505 after the bus stop code will return bus times for your chosen stop after 9.15am (0915) on the 5th (05) of the current month.

My street doesn't have bus stops - it's 'Hail & Ride'. Can I still use txt2traveline?

Yes. Although there will be nothing displayed in your particular street, you can get a code for 'Hail & Ride streets' from the attached list in the Publications section of this page.

Can txt2traveline tell me how late my bus is running?

Not yet. txt2traveline has the capability of displaying 'real time' information in areas where buses have a special transmitter fitted to them. However, at present, in Fife, no buses are equipped like this so the times displayed on your mobile will be scheduled bus departure times.

Will txt2traveline show my school bus?

Not yet. School bus pick-up/drop-off points are varied and don't always use bus stops at the side of the road. It will take time to accurately add all the data for these points.

I'm an international visitor. Will my mobile phone work with txt2traveline?

Yes. If your phone can be used in this country then it will pick up one of the local networks here and you simply send your message to the txt2traveline number, 0777 608 2 608. If, however, you wanted to try the txt2traveline service from your own country, you would be making an international call, so you would have to text your message using your country's international dialling code for Britain. In most cases, you would send your message to 0044 777 608 2 608. The cost of messages may be different than those mentioned above. Please check with your network provider in your own country.

Why should I pay for these texts? Shouldn't times be displayed at the stop for free?

Fife Council is working with the bus operators to increase the number of bus stops displaying information but, with 2,500+ to cover, it will take a long time. The technology for txt2traveline is here, now, and is simply another way to obtain bus times, just like phonelines, websites or ticket offices. It isn't seen as a replacement for bus stop timetable displays - the Council is committed to increasing displays through its Bus Passenger Information Strategy. Click Bus Passenger Information Strategy for more information.
